Doctors from OCVT Inducted as COVD Fellows

Dr. Breithaupt & Dr. Nola

At this year’s annual College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD) conference in Bellevue, WA, Dr. Aubrey Breithaupt and Dr. Alisa Nola from OCVT were initiated as fellows. All developmental optometrists at the Optometry Center for Vision Therapy are now certified FCOVD, a remarkable distinction. OCVT is pleased by this honor and is proud to offer even better care at our office locations.

COVD is a non-profit, international association of eye care professionals, which includes optometrists and vision therapists alike. The organization was founded in 1971 and helps students and professionals prepare for and gain board certification in behavioral and developmental vision care, vision therapy, and neuro-optometric rehabilitation.

The College of Optometrists in Vision Development offers an International Examination and Certification Board that tests eye care professional’s knowledge and skills. Those who complete this exam become Fellows of COVD (FCOVD), a merit all doctors at OCVT now share.

What does the FCOVD Credential Entail?

To receive COVD fellowship, a developmental optometrist needs to do more than have general knowledge about vision therapy. Here are the requirements for their rigorous certificate:

  • Complete a minimum of three years of clinical experience
  • Perform a residency or another form of continuing education (100+ hours)
  • Work for two years/1000 hours of clinical management for office-based vision therapy care
  • Pass COVD’s 100-question multiple choice exam
  • Present three case studies on previously determined subjects
  • Provide answers to six questions open-book style
  • Take part in an oral interview

After successfully fulfilling these goals, the doctors become fellows of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Fellows enjoy access to additional resources, educational tools, and patient literature that helps them in their practice. A doctor with FVOCD certification is likely to be more knowledgeable and have more vision therapy assets for your treatment.
